Dancing makes you smarter!

A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that daily dancing lowers your risk of dementia.  The authors studied leisure activities that were mental (cross words, reading) and physical (golf, biking, dancing) and dancing showed the greatest risk reduction of any leisure activity. Why? It's the split-second decision making that dancing (especially partner dancing) requires that keeps the brain learning and building new connections.  I feel this in the hoop, where every moment opens up possibility for muscles and bones to reposition, for physical and emotional weight to shift, for a new path to be chosen.  Plus the unpredictability of the hoop helps keep me focused on the creative, dynamic, ever-changing side of the dance.
